Cape Verde is an African island country and the group of volcanic islands lie between 600 and 800 km off the most western part of continental Africa.

We had the opportunity to see and read up a bit about Cape Verde today

These islands were uninhabited until the 15th century when they were discovered and colonized by Portuguese explorers. Cape Verde established the first European settlement in the tropics.

Because of where these islands are situated – they became instrumental and the capital was a hub for the Atlantic slave trade. During this time Cape Verde attracted mechants, privateers and pirates.

The transatlantic slave trade transported between 10 and 12 million people from Africa to the Americas from the 16th to the 19th century.

After the slave trade ended in the 19th century- the islands developed their economy into becoming an important commercial centre and a stop over point for shipping routes and now as well has a growing tourist industry.
