São Tomé and Principe

Today we had the great opportunity to take a stroll and a drive on the island of São Tomé.
The old colonial town of São Tomé. These 2 islands of São Tomé and Principe make up this African country and collectively have a population of around 200,000. This country became independent in 1975 and is a stable and peaceful democracy
Quiet Sunday streets. These islands were uninhabited until 1470 when they were discovered by Portuguese explorers.
A large church in town. We passed a number of churches on our drive today- it is about a 90% Christian country
Beautiful coast line. Boys with a fishing net
The fish and fruit/vegetable market
Lots of fishing boats
Beautiful coast – lots of people and kids in the ocean.
Our two hour drive to Cao Grande- the Great Canine. It is what most represents these islands in images. In 2016 Dylan and I were doing a ferry flight to Mozambique and we flew by São Tomé and were fascinated by these mountains
My fly by picture of 2016!
Tooth of a rock. 663 metres high- the remains of an extinct volcano with the outer layer eroded away. I read that the island of Principe has a number of these extinct volcanoes and has a lost world appearance
The one main road where we passed a number of villages that are built along the road
Women doing laundry on the beach. All along our drive we saw many groups of women doing their laundry on the beach and in the rivers – this happens on Saturday and Sunday
End of a good day and tomorrow we plan to complete our last leg of this journey when we fly to Kinshasa, Congo.
