Ferry flight to DRC- day in the Azores

The very charming city of Agra do Heroismo on the island of Terceira in the Azores
So many beautiful points of view
I had a bit of a chance to read up on this part of the world. The Azores are one of 2 autonomous regions of Portugal- (the other is Madeira.). The Azores islands are pretty remote as they are located 1400 km west of Lisbon and1930 km east of Newfoundland
Dylan and I have been inspired by the Camino trek and we try to walk our 20 km when we travel
Anyone who’s walked with Dylan knows he walks pretty fast so many pictures are my view from behind:)
The Fort of Greta on the shore line was constructed in 1580. The Azores were settled in the 1430’s
We walked to the town of São Mateus along the shore
Such narrow sidewalks
Nice break for lunch
Fishing is a big industry here
Beautiful rock fencing everywhere
So many beautiful views. When Dylan first travelled through these islands about 15 years ago there was next to no tourism. It was such a surprise to come across these charming islands in the middle of the ocean with their local cheese and beef stews and wine and historical architecture. The rest of the world has seemed to have discovered this now and the tourist industry has taken off in the past few years.
And cows – cows – cows
And cobbled roads- everywhere!

Upon reading about the heritage of the people here I learned that they are primarily Portuguese,Flemish, French and Spaniards – and – as well- African slaves from Guinea, Cape Verde and São Tomé. These are the three African countries we will be traveling through to get to Kinshasa. Whenever we have travelled through countries which have been colonized by the Portuguese they have these tell tale sidewalks (thinking of Mozambique and Angola ). So as we head to Cape Verde tomorrow- I will be sure to check out the sidewalks

A little bit of short lived sand art – you can see the creator walk away – it will be gone in the morning
