Sri Lanka to Indonesia

Departing Sri Lanka

10:30 pm we got our flight permits and so we were up at 5am and off just before 8

Cloudy skies for a lot of our flight over Sri Lanka- just makes me appreciate it when we get clear skies
As we flew east the clouds cleared and flew over lush mountains and fields. A central crop in the highlands is tea.
Large ship on the ocean as we approached Indonesia
First sighting of the islands of Indonesia. Indonesia is a country of islands with a count between 17000 and 18000 across the entire archipelago!
The eastern coast
Fields close to Banda Aceh
Banda Aceh airport
Many moterbikes
We visited the Grand mosque here- Masjid Baiturahman
An incredibly warm reception!! Dylan and I were completely surrounded by so many people and especially kids wanting pictures
To go into the mosque I was given a covering to wear

Banda Aceh is the capital of the Aceh province in Sumatra. The people here are mostly a part of the indigenous ethnic group of Achinese people. They are known for their political struggle against Dutch colonial rule. This has been a Muslim country for a number of centuries.

A photo I found on line after the tsunami

In 2004 on Boxing Day there was a devastating earthquake and tsunami here which killed approximately 228,000 people. This mosque has particular significance as it survived this tragedy.
