Three times a charm

Departing Wichita

Third departure attempt and we are off!

“That is why the world is round- you never know what’s around the next corner” (Out of Africa by Karen Blixen)

What a surprise! We were all set for a few days in Wichita. We had rented a car- booked a dinner reservation in Ponca City (Enrique’s Mexican Restaurant at the Ponca City Airport- where – when the kids were young and we flew on our trips to Mexico and Central America we would stop there for fuel and a massive plate of nachos!). The nacho binge will have to wait. Early this afternoon Dylan and I were walking along the river path – after taking in their veteran parade

and Dylan gets a call from Spencer- the mechanic working on the plane who says “the plane is ready to go”

Spencer and Wes
The source of the problem

Really – we should not have been surprised – with the incredible service we have gotten with them managing our problem

and

we actually are in the Air Capital of the World! All the iconic aviation brands – Beechcraft, Cessna, Learjet and Steerman were all born in Wichita and there are a lot of maintenance shops here.

Taking a short look into the history of Kansas – Wichita earned its famed title in 1928 when the production lines at the city’s 16 aircraft manufacturers rolled out 120 aircraft each week!

So by 2:30 we were in the Caravan and set off on a 4 hour flight to Albuquerque, New Mexico- half way to California.

Kansas landscape
Oklahoma
The wind farms and circular fields of Texas
Evidence of this weeks snow storm in New Mexico
Beautiful sunset coming into Albuquerque
Clouds over the mountains surrounding Albuquerque
I’m curious to see this tomorrow in the light
Landing just after dark
A surprising fun fact of Albuquerque. This October they just had their 52nd annual balloon fiesta. For 9 days hundreds of hot air balloons liftoff and float over the city

Tomorrow – Santa Maria California!

  1. I love learning about the world through your words, and I love your attitude Val. It’s so wise.
Lay those plans, but who knows what’s coming around, may as well enjoy the parade!
    Safe travels!!!
